Patron Board Member Julia Dobel arranged and sponsored a wonderful event in San Francisco on February 3, 2012. Some 50 Patrons and guests gathered at the Convent of the Sacred Heart High School in Pacific Heights. Long time Patrons like Ada Regan, Jim and Rosaleen Kelly, Kathleen Huston, Fr. Miles Riley, and Marcia Hobbs mingled with newer Patrons including Joy and Andrew Lin, Michael Stehr, Tim Crudo, Patty George and Robert Fucilla. The spectacular view of the Bay from the Mother Williams Library greeted the Patrons as they nibbled on a delicious continental breakfast complete with Bellinis. Seniors from the school directed us to the auditorium where Patron Dr. Sunnie Evers gave a fascinating presentation on the Venetian Masters. She explained the background of the paintings in the exhibition and delved into the meanings and context of the works. Dr. Evers’ talk introduced us to the paintings and set the stage for our tour. Following her talk, the Patrons reconvened at the De Young where Dr. Evers led us through the exhibition, pointing out interesting facets and answering questions.
On loan primarily from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, “The Masters of Venice: Renaissance Painters of Passion and Power” Exhibition closed on February 12. It featured dozens of works, mostly created by 16th century artists and collected by the Hapsburgs. The Venetian painters Titian, Giorgione, Veronese, Tintoretto, and Mantegna were well-represented along with pieces by Bassano, Bordone, and Palma. We feel fortunate to have been so wellprepared to visit the exhibition!
